Internal Family Systems theory adds to the discussion by integrating the Jungian idea of the Self with other parts of the personality. Parts of a personality are like states of consciousness, each with roles to fill depending on context. Managers are our parts that keep us task-focused and in control. Exiles hold painful emotions and memories out of awareness. Firefighters are extreme coping strategies that alert us to perceived danger and act forcefully to protect us. From this perspective, the Self is the core of the personality. When the self leads, we feel centered, confident and wise. We are connected to our intuitive wisdom. The primary goal of IFS therapy is to help people be led more and more by their Self consciousness versus managers, exiles, and firefighters.
