A variety of psychological theories and approaches espouse the idea that we have inner wisdom available to us. In Chapter Two I summarize some of these key theories to illustrate a convergence of ideas and to set the stage for an integrative view of healing and growth. Theories that are briefly summarized include: Freudian, Jungian, object relations, attachment, interpersonal, humanistic, family systems, control-mastery, and internal family systems.

Themes are developed which are utilized throughout the book to highlight common patterns related to psychological suffering as well as an integrative approach to health and healing. Key themes include: the human personality being composed of parts, including a central intuitive part that can provide leadership; the importance of relationships in the development of the self, the formation of psychological problems, and the potential for healing; and the key role of anxiety and anxiety management in personality development and psychological dysfunction and health.
